N = 303

Population
Patients operated on with histological confirmation of anaplastic glioma; 303 randomised, 222 in the valid study group
Design
Controlled, prospective, randomised study after surgery with histological confirmation of anaplastic glioma; four random groups: BCNU, radiotherapy, BCNU plus radiotherapy, or best conventional care without chemotherapy or radiotherapy. Analysis in the valid study group (patients who met protocol criteria) and in an adequately treated group
Arms
  • Best conventional care (control): Best conventional care, no chemotherapy or radiotherapy
  • BCNU (experimental): BCNU 80 mg/sq m/day on 3 successive days every 6 to 8 weeks
  • Radiotherapy (experimental): Whole-brain radiotherapy, 5000 to 6000 rads through bilateral opposing ports
  • BCNU plus radiotherapy (experimental): BCNU plus whole-brain radiotherapy (the abstract gives the BCNU and radiotherapy doses once for the groups that received each modality)
