Thin stage I primary cutaneous malignant melanoma: comparison of excision with margins of 1 or 3 cm
- Population
- Patients with stage I primary cutaneous malignant melanoma no thicker than 2 mm (305 narrow excision, 307 wide excision).
- Design
- Randomised prospective study of narrow excision (1 cm margins) versus wide excision (margins of 3 cm or more) for primary melanomas no thicker than 2 mm. Mean follow-up 55 months. The abstract states the major prognostic criteria were well balanced; mean thickness 0.99 mm (narrow) and 1.02 mm (wide).
- Arms
- Narrow excision, 1 cm (experimental, n = 305): Excision with 1 cm margins
- Wide excision, 3 cm or more (control, n = 307): Excision with margins of 3 cm or more
- People

| Endpoint | Analysis | Narrow excision, 1 cm | Wide excision, 3 cm or more | Effect |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Regional lymph node metastasisRandomised patients (305 narrow, 307 wide) | primaryVeronesi 1988 | 4.6% | 6.5% | Percentage of patients with subsequent regional-node metastasis as reported (the abstract does not name the denominator; presumably the patients in each group); mean follow-up 55 months; the abstract says the groups did not differ and gives no p-value. |
| Distant metastasisRandomised patients (305 narrow, 307 wide) | primaryVeronesi 1988 | 2.3% | 2.6% | Percentage of patients with subsequent distant metastasis as reported (denominator not named in the abstract; presumably the patients in each group); mean follow-up 55 months; no p-value in the abstract. Disease-free and overall survival were described as similar between the groups, without figures. |
