UKW3

Immediate nephrectomy versus preoperative chemotherapy in the management of non-metastatic Wilms' tumour (UKW3), UK Children's Cancer Study Group

N = 205

Population
Children with newly diagnosed non-metastatic renal tumours, 186 of 205 with Wilms histologies
Design
Randomised trial, 1991 to 2001: 205 patients with newly diagnosed non-metastatic renal tumours, of which 186 had Wilms histologies, were randomly assigned to immediate surgery or to 6 weeks of preoperative chemotherapy with vincristine and actinomycin D and then delayed surgery. Both groups received postoperative chemotherapy according to tumour stage and histology determined at nephrectomy.
Arms
  • Immediate nephrectomy (control): Immediate surgery, then postoperative chemotherapy by stage and histology
  • Preoperative chemotherapy, delayed surgery (experimental): 6 weeks of preoperative vincristine and actinomycin D, delayed surgery, then postoperative chemotherapy by stage and histology
