Intravesical bacillus Calmette-Guerin reduces the risk of progression in patients with superficial bladder cancer: a meta-analysis of the published results of randomized clinical trials

Phase meta-analysisN = 4,863

Population
Patients with superficial bladder cancer (stage Ta, T1 or carcinoma in situ) in 24 randomised trials.
Design
Meta-analysis of published results of randomised trials comparing transurethral resection plus intravesical BCG with resection alone or resection plus another treatment other than BCG. 24 trials with progression information on 4863 patients; median follow-up 2.5 years, maximum 15 years.
Arms
  • Resection plus BCG (experimental): Transurethral resection plus intravesical BCG
  • Control (control): Resection alone, or resection plus a treatment other than BCG

Maximum follow-up 15 years. The abstract states that only patients receiving maintenance BCG benefited and that there was no statistically significant difference in overall survival or death due to bladder cancer.
