Swedish Melanoma Study Group: 2 cm versus 5 cm resection margins for cutaneous melanoma 0.8 to 2.0 mm thick
N = 989
- Population
- Patients with primary melanoma of the trunk or extremities and tumour thickness greater than 0.8 mm and no more than 2 mm.
- Design
- Prospective randomised multicentre study; 989 patients recruited 1982 to 1991 and allocated to a 2 cm or 5 cm excision margin. Median follow-up 11 years (range 7 to 17) for survival and 8 years (range 0 to 17) for recurrence.
- Arms
- 2 cm margin (experimental): 2 cm resection margin
- 5 cm margin (control): 5 cm resection margin

Crude local recurrence (in the scar or transplant) was under 1% (8 of 989 patients). |
