POBASCAM

POBASCAM: randomised trial of HPV DNA and cytology co-testing versus cytology alone in the Dutch cervical screening programme

Population
Women aged 29-56 years participating in the Dutch cervical screening programme.
Design
Randomised 1:1 trial (January 1999 to September 2002) in the Netherlands. Women were assigned, after the cervical specimen had been taken, to HPV DNA (GP5+/6+-PCR) and cytology co-testing or cytology alone; at the second screen 5 years later, co-testing was done in both groups and researchers were masked to assignment. Analysis by intention to screen. The abstract gives the registry number ISRCTN20781131; no NCT identifier is recorded.
Primary endpoint
Detection of CIN3+
Arms
  • HPV DNA and cytology co-testing (experimental, n = 22,420): HPV DNA (GP5+/6+-PCR) and cytology co-testing at first screen
  • Cytology alone (control, n = 22,518): Cytology testing alone at first screen
