N = 78,216NCT00002540

Population
Women aged 55 to 74 years in the general US population
Design
Randomised screening trial at 10 US screening centres (November 1993 to July 2001). The intervention group was offered annual screening with CA-125 for 6 years and transvaginal ultrasound for 4 years; participants and their health care practitioners received the results and managed the evaluation of abnormal results. The usual care group received usual medical care. Follow-up was for a maximum of 13 years (median 12.4 years). This record covers the ovarian component only; the prostate and colorectal components are separate trial records.
Primary endpoint
Ovarian cancer mortality
Arms
  • Annual screening (experimental, n = 39,105): Annual CA-125 for 6 years and transvaginal ultrasound for 4 years
  • Usual care (control, n = 39,111): Usual medical care without annual screening
