Interferon-alpha versus medroxyprogesterone acetate in metastatic renal carcinoma (Medical Research Council Renal Cancer Collaborators)
- Population
- Patients with metastatic renal carcinoma
- Design
- Multicentre randomised trial of subcutaneous interferon-alpha (5 MU, 5 MU, 10 MU in the first week, then 10 MU three times per week for 11 further weeks) versus oral medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA) 300 mg once daily for 12 weeks. Primary endpoint overall survival, analysis by intention to treat. A triangular sequential design allowed early termination; the trial was stopped in November 1997 when data were available for 335 patients (167 interferon-alpha, 168 MPA).

Median-only curves assume a constant hazard (exponential) and fit plateaus, as seen with some immunotherapies, poorly.
