Randomized trial of bleomycin, etoposide, and cisplatin compared with bleomycin, etoposide, and carboplatin in good-prognosis metastatic nonseminomatous germ cell cancer: a Multiinstitutional Medical Research Council/European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Trial

N = 598

Population
Patients with good-risk nonseminomatous germ cell tumours
Design
Prospective randomised multicentre trial, September 1989 to May 1993; four cycles every 21 days, etoposide 120 mg per square metre on days 1 to 3 and bleomycin 30 U on day 2 in both arms; carboplatin dosed to a target area under the curve calculated from the glomerular filtration rate.
Arms
  • BEP (control, n = 300): Four cycles of bleomycin, etoposide and cisplatin (20 mg per square metre on days 1 to 5, or 50 mg per square metre on days 1 and 2)
  • CEB (experimental, n = 298): Four cycles of carboplatin, etoposide and bleomycin
