Neoadjuvant chemotherapy, surgery, and postoperative radiation therapy for invasive thymoma

N = 7

Population
Seven previously untreated patients with histologically confirmed, clinically staged IIIa invasive thymoma
Design
Prospective, single-treatment-arm study at the Service of Thoracic Surgery, University of Pisa (first author's affiliation), January 1988 to June 1990: neoadjuvant chemotherapy, surgery, then postoperative radiation. The abstract does not state a phase or a primary endpoint. All 7 patients had a partial response (more than 50%) and underwent complete resection (4) or incomplete resection (3: 1 with gross and 2 with microscopic residual tumour); histologic examination was negative in 2 of the completely resected patients. The authors advise reserving regular use until more patients and longer follow-up are available.
Arms
  • Neoadjuvant chemotherapy, surgery and postoperative radiation (experimental, n = 7): Three cycles every 3 weeks of cisplatin 75 mg/m2 on day 1, epirubicin 100 mg/m2 on day 1 and etoposide 120 mg/m2 on days 1, 3 and 5; then surgery; then postoperative radiation of 46 to 60 Gy (printed as 4600 to 6000 cGy)
