IWWD

Long-term outcomes of clinical complete responders after neoadjuvant treatment for rectal cancer in the International Watch & Wait Database (IWWD): an international multicentre registry study

Phase observationalN = 880

Population
Patients with rectal cancer and a clinical complete response after neoadjuvant treatment, managed by watch-and-wait
Design
Descriptive analysis of an international multicentre registry of pooled individual patient data from 47 institutes in 15 countries. Of 1009 patients who received neoadjuvant treatment and were managed by watch-and-wait, 880 (87%) with a clinical complete response were analysed. Not randomised.
Arms
  • Clinical complete response, watch-and-wait (experimental, n = 880): Neoadjuvant treatment followed by watch-and-wait (surgery omitted)

Cumulative incidence of local regrowthPatients with a clinical complete response (880)Two-year cumulative incidence of local regrowthfinalmedian follow-up 3.3 yearsvan 201825.2% at 2 y (22.2–28.5%)—The abstract states that 88% of local regrowth was diagnosed in the first 2 years and 97% was located in the bowel wall.
Cumulative incidence of distant metastasesPatients with a clinical complete response (880)Proportion of patients diagnosed with distant metastases (no time point given in the abstract)finalmedian follow-up 3.3 yearsvan 20188%—71 of 880 patients.
