Swedescreen, POBASCAM, ARTISTIC, NTCC (pooled follow-up)

Needs review

Follow-up of four European randomised controlled trials of HPV-based versus cytology-based cervical screening (Swedescreen, POBASCAM, ARTISTIC, NTCC): incidence of invasive cervical carcinoma

N = 176,464

Population
Women aged 20-64 years randomly assigned to HPV-based or cytology-based screening in the four trials.
Design
Pooled follow-up of four randomised trials in Sweden (Swedescreen), the Netherlands (POBASCAM), England (ARTISTIC) and Italy (NTCC) in which women were randomly assigned to HPV-based screening (experimental arm) or cytology-based screening (control arm). Women were followed for a median of 6.5 years (1,214,415 person-years); invasive cervical carcinomas were identified by linkage with screening, pathology and cancer registries, masked histology review or reports. Cumulative and study-adjusted rate ratios (experimental vs control) were calculated. Each original trial had used cervical precancer as its endpoint. The abstract gives no registry identifiers; none is recorded here.
Arms
  • HPV-based screening (experimental): HPV-based cervical screening (details differ by trial)
  • Cytology-based screening (control): Cytology-based cervical screening
