Cardiovascular risk factors and morbidity in long-term survivors of testicular cancer: a 20-year follow-up study

Phase observationalN = 990

Population
Men treated for unilateral testicular cancer between 1980 and 1994 (national follow-up study) (median observation 19 years, range 13 to 28); 74 (8.0%) had atherosclerotic disease during follow-up
Design
National follow-up study (2007 to 2008) of men treated for unilateral testicular cancer between 1980 and 1994, grouped by treatment, with 990 age-matched general-population controls (NORMs). Men with cardiovascular disease before or within 2 years after diagnosis were excluded from the cardiovascular endpoints. Age-adjusted Cox regression compared treatment groups with surgery only.
Arms
  • Surgery only (control, n = 206): Surgery without radiotherapy or chemotherapy
  • Radiotherapy only (experimental, n = 386): Radiotherapy only
  • Chemotherapy only (experimental, n = 364): Chemotherapy only
  • Radiotherapy and chemotherapy (experimental, n = 34): Combined radiotherapy and chemotherapy

The abstract also reports that BEP alone carried a 5.7-fold higher risk of coronary artery disease than surgery only (95% CI 1.9 to 17.1) and a 3.1-fold higher risk of myocardial infarction than the general-population controls (95% CI 1.2 to 7.7).

This group had 34 men, hence the wide interval.
