Funen randomised study of screening for colorectal cancer with faecal-occult-blood test

Population
People aged 45 to 75 years living on Funen, Denmark in August 1985 (about 140,000 considered).
Design
Randomised study on Funen, Denmark; before randomisation, people with colorectal cancer or precursor adenomas and those from a previous pilot study were excluded. Randomisation in blocks of 14 allocated three to screening, three to control and eight not to be enrolled. Hemoccult-II tests with dietary restrictions but without rehydration were sent to the screening group; only people who completed the first round were invited again, for up to five rounds over 10 years, and those with positive tests were offered colonoscopy.
Primary endpoint
Colorectal cancer mortality
Arms
