ERSPC

European Randomized Study of Screening for Prostate Cancer

N = 182,160

Population
Men aged 50-74 years at entry, identified through population registries; predefined core age group of men aged 55-69 years (162,243 men in the 2009 report).
Design
Multicentre randomised trial in European countries (seven in the 2009 report, eight in later reports). Men identified through population registries were randomly assigned to be offered PSA-based screening (at an average of once every 4 years in the 2009 report) or to a control group not offered screening. Mortality follow-up was identical in both groups; the predefined core age group was 55-69 years.
Primary endpoint
Prostate cancer mortality
Arms
  • Offered screening (experimental): Offered PSA-based screening, at an average of once every 4 years in the 2009 report
  • Not offered screening (control): No screening offered

Mortality follow-up ended 31 December 2006.
