A randomised trial of single-dose radiotherapy to prevent procedure tract metastasis by malignant mesothelioma

Population
Patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma after invasive thoracic procedures; 58 procedure sites randomised
Design
Randomised trial in which 58 sites (not patients) of invasive thoracic procedures in patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma were randomised to prophylactic radiotherapy (a single 9-MeV electron treatment, 10 Gy) or none. The abstract reports no statistically significant difference in tract metastasis and gives no counts, p value or confidence interval. The counting unit is the site, which differs from the other tract-radiotherapy trials.
Arms
  • No radiotherapy (control): No prophylactic radiotherapy to the procedure site
  • Single-dose radiotherapy (experimental): Single 9-MeV electron treatment (10 Gy) to the procedure site
