Prevention of malignant seeding after invasive diagnostic procedures in patients with pleural mesothelioma: a randomized trial of local radiotherapy
N = 40
- Population
- 40 consecutive patients with histologically proven malignant pleural mesothelioma who had an invasive diagnostic procedure (cytology, needle biopsy, thoracoscopy or chest tube placement)
- Design
- Randomised prospective study of 40 consecutive patients with histologically proven malignant pleural mesothelioma. Twenty patients received three daily sessions of local radiotherapy at a dosage of 7 Gy, 10 to 15 days after thoracoscopy; twenty did not. The abstract reports the numbers developing entry-tract metastasis and does not state the follow-up period, the randomisation method or any statistical test.
- Arms
- No radiotherapy (control, n = 20): No local radiotherapy
- Local radiotherapy (experimental, n = 20): Three daily sessions of local radiotherapy at a dosage of 7 Gy, 10 to 15 days after thoracoscopy
- People

| Procedure-tract metastasis incidence40 randomised patients | finalBoutin 1995 | — | 40% | Only the figure printed as a percentage is entered: 8 of the 20 patients not irradiated (40%) developed entry-tract metastasis. None of the 20 irradiated patients did (the abstract gives it in words, so it is stated in words here and not entered as a rate). The abstract gives no p value, follow-up time or confidence interval. |
