Wani and Horwitz write that in 1977 the National Cancer Institute asked Susan Band Horwitz, then at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, to study how taxol works. Her laboratory published its first paper on the mechanism in 1979, reporting that taxol promoted the assembly of microtubules.
