Janet D. Rowley

University of Chicago

Author of a 1973 Nature letter reporting a new consistent chromosomal abnormality in chronic myelogenous leukaemia, identified with quinacrine fluorescence and Giemsa staining. Radich (2022) describes the banding techniques of the 1970s as pioneered by Rowley and as showing that the Philadelphia chromosome is a reciprocal translocation between chromosomes 22 and 9. Life dates are taken from the title of an obituary (Druker, Nature 2014).
