Co-discoverer of the cellular origin of retroviral oncogenes

With Harold Varmus used an oncogenic retrovirus to show that the viral oncogene derives from a normal cellular gene; co-author of the 1976 Nature paper and joint recipient of the 1989 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
