Scientist described by Elion as proposing that antagonists of the nucleic acid bases could stop dividing cells

G. H. Hitchings

In her 1988 Nobel lecture Elion says Hitchings theorised that, since all cells need nucleic acids, antagonists of the nucleic acid bases might stop the growth of rapidly dividing cells such as bacteria, tumours and protozoa, and that Hitchings and Falco devised a screening test in Lactobacillus casei.
