1920-2012 · Researcher in hormone action and estrogen receptors
Elwood V. Jensen
Researcher in hormone action. An obituary in PNAS (O'Malley and Khan, 2013) places his early work in the late 1950s, when he gave radioactive estrogen to rats and found it retained in estrogen-responsive tissues, which led to the estrogen receptor theory. First author of a 1968 Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences paper on a two-step mechanism for the interaction of estradiol with rat uterus and of a 1971 monograph paper on estrogen receptors and breast cancer response to adrenalectomy; co-author of a 2003 review describing the estrogen receptor as a model for molecular medicine.
