Pathologist at the Institute for Pathological Histology and Bacteriology, University of Vienna, as named on the title page of his 1898 paper on a form of tuberculosis of the lymphatic apparatus in cases labelled pseudoleukaemia

Carl Sternberg

Institute for Pathological Histology and Bacteriology, University of Vienna

Carl Sternberg's 1898 paper in the Zeitschrift fuer Heilkunde, written at the Vienna institute named on its title page, described the histology of cases clinically labelled pseudoleukaemia, including unusually large cells, and interpreted the process as a peculiar tuberculosis. Reed (1902) wrote that he concluded he was dealing with a peculiar form of the tuberculous process, a view she did not accept. The giant cell of Hodgkin's disease is named in part after him.
