Wani and Horwitz write that in August 1962 USDA botanist Arthur S. Barclay and three college student assistants collected 650 plant samples in California, Washington and Oregon, including bark, twigs, leaves and fruit of the Pacific yew (Taxus brevifolia) in Washington State. Weaver says the yew samples came from a single tree, on the last day of the expedition.
