Cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy for malignant peritoneal mesothelioma: multi-institutional experience

Phase observationalN = 405

Population
405 patients with diffuse malignant peritoneal mesothelioma, mean age 50 years, treated by a uniform approach at participating institutions
Design
Multi-institutional data registry of 405 patients with diffuse malignant peritoneal mesothelioma treated with cytoreductive surgery and, in 372 (92%), hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy. Primary end point overall survival; secondary end point prognostic variables for overall survival (multivariate analysis). Follow-up complete in 401 patients (99%); median follow-up for patients alive 33 months (range 1-235). Mean age 50 years (SD 14); 318 (79%) epithelial tumours; 25 (6%) positive lymph nodes; mean peritoneal cancer index 20; 187 (46%) complete or near-complete cytoreduction. No registry or trial identifier is printed in the abstract and none was found on ClinicalTrials.gov. No randomised comparison.

Median follow-up of 33 months (range 1-235) is for the patients who were alive. The abstract prints '1 to 235 months' beside the overall median without a label; it is identical to the follow-up range given for patients alive, so it is read as a range and not entered as a confidence interval.
