Comparison of surgical techniques for early-stage thymoma: feasibility of minimally invasive thymectomy and comparison with open resection

Phase observationalN = 40

Population
40 patients with Masaoka stage I (14) or stage II (26) thymoma; 19 men and 21 women
Design
Retrospective review of 40 patients who had surgical resection of early-stage thymoma over a 12-year period (stage I 14, stage II 26; median age 64 years, range 35-86): open thymectomy in 22 and video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) in 18. The primary end point studied was OS. Median follow-up 36 months. Operative mortality 0%. Median length of hospital stay 3 days with VATS and 5 days with open surgery (P = .0001). No significant differences in estimated recurrence-free and overall 5-year survival rates (83% to 100%) between the groups. Not randomised.
Primary endpoint
OS
Arms
  • Open thymectomy (control, n = 22): Open surgical resection of the thymoma
  • VATS thymectomy (experimental, n = 18): Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgical resection of the thymoma
