Chemotherapy for invasive thymoma. A 13-year experience

N = 37

Population
37 patients (20 men, 17 women; median age 40 years) with stage III or IV invasive thymoma referred for chemotherapy.
Design
Single-centre experience, Padova Medical Oncology Department, 1977 to 1990. All patients initially received ADOC (cisplatin 50 mg/m2 and doxorubicin 40 mg/m2 intravenously on day 1, vincristine 0.6 mg/m2 on day 3, cyclophosphamide 700 mg/m2 on day 4) recycled at monthly intervals. The abstract does not name a phase, a primary endpoint or response criteria.
Arms
  • ADOC (experimental, n = 37): Cisplatin 50 mg/m2, doxorubicin 40 mg/m2, vincristine 0.6 mg/m2 and cyclophosphamide 700 mg/m2 at monthly intervals

ORR37 patients referred for chemotherapy (analysis population not stated)finalFornasiero 199191.8%—Complete plus partial response rate 91.8%, of which 43% were complete remissions (as printed; no whole number of the 37 patients gives exactly 91.8%, since 34 of 37 is 91.9%, and the abstract gives no numerator). Seven of the 16 complete remissions were confirmed pathologically at a later thoracotomy. Median duration of response 12 months (range 2 to 96+ months). The abstract states no life-threatening side effects were noted. Response criteria are not stated.

Median-only curves assume a constant hazard (exponential) and fit plateaus, as seen with some immunotherapies, poorly.
